Calibration

SPOT by Welch Allyn Calibration*/Software FAQ

The SPOT Vision Screener comes fully calibrated, however, if you feel the unit needs a re-calibration, please follow the directions below or refer to your user manual.

*Your Spot Vision Screener does not need to be calibrated like a SureSight Vision Screener.

Touchscreen Calibration

The Spot touchscreen can be calibrated by selecting Touchscreen from the tools menu. You will be asked to confirm whether or not you want to calibrate the screen. If you select Calibrate, it is a simple two-step process to complete calibration:

Step 1 - A series of 5 crosshairs will appear one after the other, starting in the upper left hand corner (Figure 26). Simply touch each target as close to center as possible (a stylus is a useful tool for calibrating the touchscreen). After all 5 targets have been touched, move to Step 2.

NOTE: If you do not touch the first target within 15 seconds, the calibration will be cancelled.

Step 2 - A series of 5 confirmation targets will appear one after the other, starting in the upper left hand corner again (Figure 27). Simply touch the crosshairs without going outside the circle surrounding each target, and the calibration will be complete.

Great Device
Review by
The Spot vision screener is great for screening our younger kids and our students with disabilities who have a hard time with the screening charts. It's quick and only requires for the student to look at the screener, and is able to point out gaze or astigmatism that may be missed using an acuity chart. The only thing I would comment is sometimes the fail results are not consistent; after rechecking a fail, the numbers sometimes show up differently, though it usually is still a fail at least. I would recommend rechecking the fails to get an average. Also if you plan on taking the screener to more than one site, I would recommend purchasing a printer separately; the one in the bundle is very large and not particularly portable. Overall I am very glad we have this resource for our students.

Outstanding Device!
Review by
This device is wonderful! Our Lions Clubs have used it to screen the vision of more than 1,500 children in about seven months. It is easy to use, non-invasive, and non-threatening. It detects numerous conditions to give early warning to parents, educators, and health care providers. We have found that between 15 and 20 per cent of persons screened should be referred for further evaluation. We found astigmatism in a child thirteen months old, for example. Every child in the world should be screened. It works for adults as well.

Testimonials
Testimonials “Two years ago, our school was a “B” school. Last year we implemented a comprehensive vision screening program with proper follow-up exams and glasses for those in need. We feel our vision improvement program contributed to our school moving back up to an “A” school.”
- Principal Brandy Hogue, Spirit Elementary School in Volusia County, FL

"The teachers reported an increase in grades. One teacher of an autistic student came into the office in tears, so grateful. The student now has glasses, stays in her seat and keeps working." - Sarah Miranda, Vision Screening Coordinator at Palmetto Elementary in Poinciana, FL

"Spot is so superior and we are very pleased with the information. We really love using Spot - it’s very quick and easy to use. Spot’s great; we tell everyone about it!"
- Lion Ed Jener, Retired NASA Project Mgr., Bella Vista, AR Lions Club

"Thank you so much for letting us do a trial run with the spot vision equipment. A parent caught up with me in the hallway with a huge hug to thank us for doing the vision screening.
The mother said she had just returned from the ophthalmologist with her child and the doctor was so impressed that we picked up the abnormal screening, he asked her what school her child attended and could not believe the nurse in a routine screening caught the abnormality.
The mother said the doctor told her the average charts used in a school screening would not have alerted the nurse to send the child for screening. Due to the referral the child will only need glasses until the age of about ten years old instead of a lifetime. We shared this story with our Head of Lower School and the President of our school. We have requested the spot school screening vision equipment to be included in our budget for next year. In addition we were able to screen all of our students in six hours verses the fourteen it had taken us in the past."
-Susan Taylor RN MSN, Director of Health Services, Pine Crest School
Did You Know
Did You Know Every day, 12.5 million children go to school with an undetected or uncorrected vision issue and only 10% of those in need ever receive care. Additionally, the demand on schools to catch these issues is ever increasing while resources decline along with budgets. The SPOT Vision Screener from Welch Allyn is optimized for mass school screenings and can capture objective vision screening results in 1 second or less. Screenings are reimbursable through CPT code 99177 making the unit budget friendly. The SPOT Vision Screener also provides reliable and validated results reducing over-referral results.
